Funeral for the Food System
Our food system is no longer fit for purpose. The system has evolved into something incredibly extractive and inequitable, which attempts to feed us, yet it does not nourish us, or the planet that we live on. There is a lot we love about our food system, but structurally it has been sick for a while. We have held onto the fact that if we come up with ‘the right solution’, we can fix it all, and we can save it. Our focus has been on curing our food system and mending the pieces that were broken. While we have focused our efforts here we have been unable to see beyond this. We have been unable to imagine what a new healthy, regenerative system could look like…
Sadly, following this long, drawn-out illness, the food system has finally died.
We need to take this time to remember all that was good and all that was bad about it, in order to properly mourn it.
And then maybe we can approach things differently – taking the opportunity to take big and bold actions, dream, create and rebuild without the underlying sickness holding back our imagination, innovation and direction. Just maybe this will mean we are able to reimagine the future of our food system in a new way, with a different perspective focussed on the possibilities that a new system could bring, and not limited by the shortcomings of the old.
